Unattended death cleanup and odor removal
When a death goes undiscovered for days or weeks, the cleanup is complex and the odor can spread through a building. Specialists handle both.
Why this requires specialists
Decomposition releases fluids that penetrate mattresses, flooring, subfloors and sometimes into the unit below, along with odor compounds that cling to porous materials. Surface cleaning and air fresheners won't resolve it. Specialists typically:
- Remove affected furniture, bedding, flooring and building materials, and handle them as regulated waste
- Clean and disinfect the structure, sometimes sealing subfloors after treatment
- Use odor-control equipment (such as hydroxyl generators or ozone, used with the space unoccupied) to remove remaining odors
- Address insects that are often present
For landlords and property managers
In apartment buildings, fluids and odor can affect adjacent units and shared ventilation. Act quickly, notify your insurance carrier, and keep neighboring tenants informed. Ask the provider to document affected areas for the claim.
For families
You do not need to enter the space or sort belongings yourself before cleanup. Tell the provider about items you want to try to save (photos, documents, jewelry); they can often recover and clean them. Our guide what to do after an unattended death walks through the first steps, including working with the LA County Medical Examiner.
