Needle and sharps cleanup
Discarded needles create a real risk of needlestick injury. Specialists collect them safely and dispose of them as medical waste.
Situations where this comes up
- Vacant rental units or properties after a tenancy ends
- Parking lots, alleys, landscaping and stairwells of commercial properties
- Encampment cleanup on private property
- Vehicles and storage units
Don't pick them up bare-handed
If you find a needle, don't try to recap it or break it. Keep others away. If you must move a single needle, use tongs or heavy gloves and place it point-first into a rigid, puncture-resistant container with a lid. In California, sharps may not be placed in household trash or recycling. They must go into an approved sharps container and to an approved disposal site or mail-back program.
If someone is stuck by a used needle, wash the area with soap and water and seek medical care promptly.
What professionals add
For larger areas, technicians sweep the property systematically with protective equipment, collect sharps and other paraphernalia, disinfect contaminated surfaces, and dispose of everything through regulated medical waste channels. They can also provide documentation for property managers and owners.
